Shivering King and Others, an Album by Dead Meadow. Released June 3, 2003 on (catalog no. OLE-566; CD). 'Shivering King And Others' was recorded to sound like hearing loss.' That hit it square on the head. And Shivering King carried me safely through the throng of aggressive lads, fruitcakes and general ditherers with a certain amount. Dead Meadow met in the DC punk/indie scene, though their music draws from more faraway sources. The band formed in the fall of 1998 from the ashes of local bands The Impossible Five and Colour, when singer-guitarist Jason Simon, bassist Steve Kille, and drummer Mark Laughlin set out to fuse their love of early 70's hard rock and 60's psychedelia with their love of writers J.R.R. Tolkien and H.P. Lovecraft. Dead Meadow released their six-song debut in 2000 on Fugazi bassist Joe Lally's Tolotta Records, and a joint vinyl release on Washington D.C. indie label Planaria R… read more

Artist Background:
Dead Meadow, a 3 piece from Washington DC, plays heavy blues-influenced stoner rock. They have a similar feel to Kadavar, though it feels more doom-y at times (as it trudges along for some of the songs in a style very reminiscent of doom). They have put out 8 full albums and one live album.
My Thoughts:
This album is a lot slower and introspective than Abra Kadavar, yet still has a very similar feel to it. The songs are slower, more bluesy, but still very heavy. There’s lots of use of the wah pedal, and many of the songs are swung. Like Abra Kadavar I think this would be good driving music, though it’s more attuned to a leisurely cruise through the countryside than a highway. My favorite songs were I Love You Too, Everything’s Going On, and Shivering King.
What did you guys think?
Do you think the comparisons to Kadavar are fair? I'm not well versed in Dead Meadow's discography, but the throwback sound seems similar to me.
